Overview of User Roles

User Roles

This page outlines the general permission schemes for a CMS-based website.  Stakeholders can arbitrarily rename roles, however for the tech teams responsible for the site- it is recommend to include these labels when defining each role.

Administrative roles:

  • Administrator: full Drupal system privileges, should be limited to top level system/web administrators only.
  • Site Manager: In addition to editorial roles, can delete pages, manage menu links and footer blocks, manage Drupal Google Analytics module settings, administer users, and access Drupal system reports

Editorial roles:

  • Editor (sites without an approval workflow):  Can create/edit page content, as well as publish them.
  • Publishing Editor (sites requiring an approval workflow):  Has moderation permissions to approve/publish contributed content/content revisions or return content to draft mode.
  • Contributor (sites requiring an approval workflow): Can create/edit Page content, but not publish any revisions/changes.

Other:

  • Redirect/Analytics Manager:  Has permission to modify custom redirect rules for any vanity urls, and configure Google Analytics module settings.  This role only needs to be applied if your organization has an outside marketing vendor that needs access to your site for setting up SEO services and campaigns.
  • Authenticated User: a basic Drupal user account, that includes basic access to view published content in a locked-down Drupal site implementation
